Sthandwa Nzuza Starts a New Chapter in Television

Mzwandile Mhlongo | 04 March 2025

Popular former Ukhozi FM radio presenter Sthandwa Nzuza believes that it’s never too late to start something new in life.

She is stepping into the world of television presenting with a brand-new show, Molapo O Reng, airing every Thursday at 5 PM on Moja Love (DStv Channel 157) starting from March 6.

“The name of the show means ‘What does the law say?’ People come with different problems such as divorce, abuse, and more. A team of lawyers provides advice on the best way to handle their situations. I present in my native Zulu, while others speak Sotho and Tswana, creating a mix of languages,” Sthandwa explained.

At 40 years old, this is her first time as a TV presenter, even though she is well-known for radio and acting.

“They say life begins at 40. This is my first time presenting a TV show, but I have a lot of experience in broadcasting. It wasn’t too difficult because I applied all my radio experience in front of the camera. The only difference is the cameras, but my energy remains the same,” she said.

She has found a passion for presenting and hopes to continue if a second season is confirmed. She also hinted that she is working on other television projects.

“It seems like TV loves me! I’m also acting in a project that I really enjoy.”

For now, she has no plans to return to radio.

“I believe everything happens at the right time. I don’t rush things. If radio calls again in the future, I’ll consider it, but I won’t force it. My advice to others is to never give up. In this industry, you often attend interviews and auditions but don’t get chosen. Keep pushing and grab new opportunities when they come.”

Event Organizer Alleges Fraud by Maskandi Artist Over Non-Performance Dispute

09 June 2024

Mzwandile Mhlongo

Mthetho Latha, the organizer of the Mgungundlovu Maskandi Festival, is embroiled in a legal dispute with Maskandi artist Njoko "iHobosha" Mbambo over a R7,500 payment for a performance that never took place.

Latha claims that he paid Njoko half of the agreed fee to perform at his 2019 event, but the artist failed to show up, despite the event running until 11 PM. According to Latha, repeated attempts to contact Njoko on the day of the event went unanswered. The following day, Njoko agreed to return the money but later reneged on this promise, citing marketing costs as a reason to withhold half of the payment.

"He promised to arrive by 6 PM, but he never showed up. He later agreed to return the R7,500, but when the time came, he went silent. Eventually, he claimed half should be retained for marketing since his photo was used to promote the event. This was not part of our agreement," said Latha, who has now decided to take legal action.

Njoko, however, has a different version of events. He admits to not attending the event but blames Latha for the situation. Njoko asserts that he had multiple commitments that day and was on his way when Latha allegedly called him around 3 PM, saying the event was over, prompting Njoko to turn back.

"I lowered my usual rate to R15,000 as a favor to Latha, who was just starting out. I agreed to take half upfront. On the day of the event, I informed him I would arrive in the evening. He called around 3 PM to say it was over, so I turned back," said Njoko. He insisted that using his photo for marketing justifies retaining half the upfront payment.

Latha refuted Njoko's claim about the event ending early and remains firm in his stance that the full amount should be returned. As the dispute escalates to legal action, it underscores the challenges and misunderstandings that can arise in event planning and artist management.

Maskandi Musician Masinga Fights for Life After Stabbing Incident with Girlfriend

12 May 2024

Mzwandile Mhlongo

Maskandi artist, Lindelani "Masinga" Dumakude, is in a critical condition at a private hospital in Johannesburg after being rushed there following a severe stabbing by his girlfriend during an argument about their relationship.

Masinga (34) from Nhlesi, Mabomvini in Msinga, said he was stabbed by the woman he was dating after an argument ensued when he told her they should break up.

He said this decision was prompted by their constant disagreements and her abusive and violent behavior.

"She couldn't accept the breakup. This incident happened after I had performed at a maskandi event in Germiston on Sunday night.

"This woman kept calling and insulting me. After dropping off the guys I work with, I went to park at my place in Germiston.

"As soon as I finished parking, I saw someone opening the door. It was the woman I was dating.

"I was still in shock, trying to understand what she wanted when she suddenly stabbed me near the heart," said Masinga, who is known as Isigqoko Sembongolo and plays Bhekumuzi Luthuli's tune.

He says the stab wound was so deep and the way she pressed the knife, he still doesn't know how he survived.

Masinga, famous for his albums "Ekoneni" (2023) and "Emagcekeni" (2021), said he hasn't opened a case yet because he is still receiving treatment in the hospital, and doctors told him the wound is in a critical area.

While in the hospital, he said he doesn't want people to know his location because he fears for his life.

When asked why he wanted to break up with the suspect, he said their relationship was already abusive.

The media tried to get a comment from the suspect, but she responded and then deleted her reply on WhatsApp.

National Ingoma Awards to Elevate Traditional Zulu Dance

Mzwandile Mhlongo

Durban, April 17, 2024 – The vibrant world of traditional Zulu dance is set to shine brighter with the launch of the National Ingoma Awards. This inaugural event, held at the Mushroom Lounge in Durban, marks a significant milestone in recognizing the talents of traditional dancers across South Africa.

A Platform for Traditional Dance

The National Ingoma Awards will feature 38 categories, celebrating the diversity and skill within traditional Zulu dance. While the exact date of the awards ceremony is yet to be announced, the venue will remain the Mushroom Lounge, the same location as the launch event.

Organizer's Vision

The awards are the brainchild of Xolani Mcineka, a renowned organizer in the traditional music scene. Mcineka is known for the Impucuzeko Maskandi festival, also called the Maskandi World Cup, where artists showcase their live performances. His passion for traditional music and dance led to the creation of the Ingoma kaZwelonke competition two years ago, and now the National Ingoma Awards.

"Maskandi music has grown tremendously, and it's now a well-recognized genre. However, traditional dance, despite its popularity, lacks the recognition it deserves. With the Ingoma kaZwelonke competition and now these awards, we aim to change that," said Mcineka. "It's crucial to recognize the contributions of all members in a dance group, not just the leaders."

Historical Moments and Growing Popularity

The traditional dance competition has seen its share of dramatic moments. In 2022, the event gained widespread attention when popular maskandi artist Mthandeni Manqele made a grand entrance in a helicopter, accusing the organizers of excluding him from the Ifolo lomaskandi dance group.

The following year, the competition was graced by the presence of Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa, highlighting the growing importance and recognition of traditional Zulu dance in South Africa's cultural landscape.

Future Prospects

As the National Ingoma Awards prepare to honor the best in traditional Zulu dance, the event promises to elevate the status of these talented performers. Mcineka's vision is for Ingoma kaZwelonke to reach the same heights as maskandi music, ensuring that traditional dancers receive the recognition and opportunities they deserve.

The launch of the National Ingoma Awards marks a new chapter in the celebration of Zulu cultural heritage, bringing traditional dance to the forefront and inspiring future generations to embrace and preserve their rich cultural traditions.

Mzwandile Mhlongo | 03 JULY 2024

After nearly three decades of captivating audiences, SABC2's beloved telenovela, Muvhango, faces an uncertain future due to unresolved contract negotiations. The show, produced by Duma Ndlovu, is at a crossroads as the current season ends on Tuesday without any new episodes lined up for the foreseeable future.

Insiders reveal that while the show's filming wrapped up on June 15th, new contracts for the next season have yet to be signed, leading to the cessation of production. Typically, contracts would be renewed well before the end of a season, ensuring a seamless transition. However, this year has seen an unusual delay, raising concerns among cast, crew, and fans alike.

In an unexpected move, Muvhango took to social media to share a heartfelt message with its audience: "End of the Road for Muvhango, Thank you for watching all these years." This announcement has left many wondering about the underlying issues preventing the show's continuation.

Despite the lack of a formal statement from SABC, the show's social media announcement has sparked widespread speculation. With Muvhango holding the title of the number one show on SABC2, its potential hiatus comes as a shock to its dedicated viewers.

Industry experts suggest that the delay in contract renewals may stem from financial disputes or strategic shifts within the network. The absence of clear communication from SABC only fuels these speculations, leaving the show's fate hanging in the balance.

Fans of Movhango are now left in suspense, hoping for a resolution that will bring their favorite characters back to the screen. As the show navigates this turbulent period, its loyal audience remains hopeful that Muvhango will continue to grace their evenings with its compelling storytelling.

In the meantime, the entertainment industry watches closely, as the outcome of these negotiations could set a precedent for other long-running shows facing similar challenges.
